GM006 + Interview: Alexander Lewis

We're back with a Mix from our buddy Alexander Lewis. Alex also took some time out to answer some questions for us so you can get to know him more.

Who is Alexander J. Lewis?

I am a multi-instrumentalist/producer in my 20's from Vacaville (cow town) California.

How long have you been producing?

A little over 2 years.

How would you describe your sound?

Describing my sound is hard. I have an aggressive/tender side to my music. Heavy on big synths but I like them sounding beautiful at the same time.

Electric mantis said my music was perfectly imperfect haha

What inspired you to produce your style/genre? Was there a moment that made you want to make electronic music?

I was introduced to producing by my good friends Ivan (from Brass tracks) and Jnthn Stein. At the time I was HEAVILY influenced by Bobby Tank. Then I got heavy into SBTRKT, James Blake, Ryan Hemsworth. I think what ultimately got me into making beats like I am today was Team Supreme. Those weekly beat cyphers were a God send.

How do you like to work on a track?  What’s your process?

I like to start making fresh new tracks in the morning. That's when my head is clearest and my ears are fully rested. After I have a solid concept I usually pour myself a beer or two and let instinct take over

Did you think you'd be travelling across the country playing gigs?

Honestly I had no idea. This is all just an amazing experience for me.

Who are your favorite producers/artists at the moment?

I'd say most of my homies, in no particular order:

Jnthn stein

Brass tracks

And Weird Inside (one of my all time favs)

I think these guys are doing really great things right now.

Any forthcoming projects, EPs or an LP in the works?

I have a bunch of single projects brewing atm. I have a release coming up with Elysian Records Oct 5th. A track for the new Daruma Compilation. I'll be releasing some stuff on Film Noir. Working on a Louis the Child remix. A track on Jay Princes upcoming EP, another one with Brass tracks on their upcoming EP. Multiple things with KRNE. And I'm working with Yogi on some stuff for his project. I'm really excited about tying the knots on all of these projects.

Any gripes with the current EDM culture?

Obviously the stuff that's been going down on soundcloud. But I'm pretty new to everything so ask me this question in a year and I'm sure it'll change haha.

What kind of music did you grow up listening to? What was the first album you owned?

I grew up listening to mostly Jazz. I think I was listening to jazz until I was like 22 and then started realizing there was all this other great music to experience!

What piece of technology would you like to own but can't afford (yet)?

I can't really think of anything. I'm pretty content with what I have atm.
